Mourneabbey 3-12 Grenagh 1-03

Mourneabbey proved far too strong for Grenagh in this Junior Ladies football championship clash in Grenagh last Tuesday, 13th August. From the start Mourneabbey took control of the game with Lorraine Dennehy opening the scoring in the opening three minutes. Further points rapidly followed from Rachel Buckley, Eva O'Donoghue and Caoilfhionn Brophy before Sinead Coakley burst through from mid-field for a good goal. The Mourneabbey keeper, Elaine Kelly, dealt well with everything but was rarely tested as the full backs Maria Murphy and Shauna Kelly marked their opponents very tightly while the half-back line of Alison Behan, Jolene Forde and Emer Browne were also dominant. Cliona Woulfe pointed for Mourneabbey before a fine Eva O'Donoghue goal was followed by another Lorraine Dennehy score. At this stage Grenagh lost their wing-forward to a serious looking knee injury which led to a lengthy delay. Luckily, Louise Forde and Kathleen Browne were on hand to offer their valuable medical expertise which was much appreciated. On the restart, Mourneabbey continued as they had left off with Grainne Twomey kicking 2 points either side of a Jolene Forde effort. Just before half-time Mourneabbey rang the changes with Louise Forde, Amy Twohig and Amy O'Connell coming on and all played well despite being assigned unfamiliar roles. Sara Fitzpatrick, Karen Graham, Rachel Fitzpatrick and Yvonne Barry all joined the fray in the second half and got on the ball at any opportunity. Grenagh struck for a goal and a point from Maeve O'Donovan but Eva O'Donoghue replied immediately with another goal. The play for the remainder of the game became quite disjointed and Grenagh added two points with Eva O'Donoghue responding with two points for Mourneabbey who ran out convincing winners by 3-12 to 1-03. Mourneabbey have now qualified for the county quarter-final where they will face Bride Rovers.
