Clyda Rover footballers more than deserved their Premier Intermediate County Final win over Macroom at Pairc UI Chaoimh last Sunday. As always a large Clyda crowd were in attendance to witness this spirited and determined side win on a final score line of 0-13 to 0-8. This is the clubs third time in its history winning the competition, the last time was 1996, when some of the current panel were mere toddlers. Great credit is due to this Clyda side, who in the last four years have lost three finals . Bar the opening minutes of the game, Clyda looked in control of the encounter. Macroom opened the scoring with 2 points, before Clyda's Conor Flanagan levelled things a few minutes later. Further Clyda points from Cian O Sullivan and a James Murphy free took them 2 up. Each member of the team played their part on the day, with the back line of Chris Kenny, Ray Carey, Fionn O Shea, Niall O Mullane, Ollie O Hanlon, Chris Buckley and goalie Cian Conway dealing ably with what came their way. In his well delivered speech Clyda Captain Oliver O Hanlon thanked the Clyda back room team of Manager John Walsh, medic Caroline Coughlan, Cormac O Sullivan, Jerry O Sullivan, Brian Flanagan and Vincent Twomey for all their hard work during the year. Special mention went to Coach Ned English, who having joined Clyda this season, with his special blend of football took Clyda to glory yesterday. Following on from a meal in Blarney, it was back to Mourneabbey Community Centre where a large crowd greeted the team. A huge contingent of the Clyda Juvenile Club led the team into the hall, where speeches were given by Liam Madden Community Council Chairperson, Jeremiah Ronayne Clyda Gaa Chairperson, Michael Nyhan Juvenile Gaa Chairperson, Donal Fitzpatrick Mourneabbey Ladies Football Chairperson. Team Captain Oliver O Hanlon gave another fine speech and introduced the team to all present. Nora T O Sullivan gave a rendition of her specially written song for the occasion. Light refreshments were then enjoyed by all, on what will go down as a great day and evening in the small parish of Clyda. It was then off to the Railway Bar, where celebrations continued, and I'm sure will continue for some time to come!
